Life always throws you unexpected curveballs, and as an entrepreneur you have to be willing to explore every option and make the necessary changes.Parts of your initial plan will unravel and alter as you put yourself out there and start networking or researching. Changes are not bad to make, but rather alterations to the plan that you understand will help you succeed.
I recently encountered this through my networking and research. I was talking to a friend when I mentioned that consulting may be an option for me that I had overlooked. With an investment of equipment and software I could begin offering services much sooner. Granted I would lose the marketing support and operational support, but I would be putting much less into startup. Whether this is more or less risky I am not sure of yet, but I think it is a risk I would like to take.
As I was explaining this he mentioned that he was considering consulting as well, his field of marketing and advertising is different than mine of accounting and finance, but they could compliment each other well as a full service consulting firm. We began to then list other people we knew of that were considering the world of self employment and soon enough we had a well rounded list of services to offer.
So a new plan has arisen and new definitions have been given to market size, target customers, services, and business format. My research is now being driven to a different direction. Though I also have new things to consider as far as the structure of the company, operational processes, capital investments, and so on, like any good surfer I have to be willing to ride the wave. Because you never know when it will break and send you in a different direction.
